Associate professor and academic sculptor Michal Gabriel (*1960 in Prague) is a well-known Czech artist, university professor and icon of contemporary art.
After attending the Secondary School of Applied Art in Prague he graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Applied Art in Prague. In 1987 he founded the art group Tvrdohlaví together with other prominent personalities from the art scene. In 1995 he received the prestigious Jindřich Chalupecký prize for his work. Since 1998 he has worked at the Faculty of Applied Arts in the Brno University of Technology, where he was also the dean from 2007 to 2010. In addition to this he teaches at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He has created a number of major sculptures in the public arena, and his major works also include the decoration of the Indonesian jungle pavilion at Prague Zoo.
